Kroger tries to compete on more than just price
KROGER’S FOUR: Kroger Co. says it has four keys to grocery strategy: competitive prices; clean, quick-checkout stores; well-trained and helpful employees, and a wide assortment of food choices.
WAL-MART’S PRICES: Wal-Mart Stores has signaled plans for more price cuts, which some analysts think will aggravate keen competition for recession-pinched shoppers.
BETTER DAYS?: Kroger’s CEO thinks there will be “gentle inflation” that will relieve price fighting; and that its stores are seeing rebounding sales of discretionary items such as jewelry, flowers and wine.
