Summary Box: Stocks climb on upbeat Fed chatter
FED RELIEF: Stocks rose Tuesday after the Federal Reserve said it would continue to hold its interest rate target at a record low. The central bank also said it is seeing the job market stabilize and business spending improve.
REMAINING HEADACHES: Besides unemployment, the Fed said that the housing market remains weak.
HELP FROM THE DOLLAR: The Fed’s commitment to holding rates low eroded support for the dollar. The falling dollar, in turn, pumped up prices of commodities. That helped energy and materials stocks.
