Summary Box: Retirement savings a challenge

RETIRE? ARE YOU KIDDING? A new survey released Tuesday by the Employee Benefit Research Institute shows the percentage of workers who say they’ve saved for retirement slid to 69 percent in January, down from 75 percent in 2009.

THE PIGGY BANK’S EMPTY: More than a quarter of those surveyed have less than $1,000 set aside.

I HAVE TO DO THE MATH? Less than half of workers say they’ve tried to calculate how much they’ll need to live comfortably.

REGAINING FAITH: Workers’ confidence in their ability to have enough money to retire comfortably has stabilized, but remains near last year’s 20-year low. Those saying they’re very confident was 16 percent, significantly lower than the 27 percent who were confident in 2007.
