Summary box: Staples 4th-quarter results
SALES IMPROVING: Staples’ sales to both consumers and small businesses improved in North America during its fourth quarter. Overall revenue rose 4 percent, the second quarter of improvement after four quarters of declines.
OFFICE PRODUCTS PICTURE BETTER: The results are in line with those at smaller rivals Office Depot and OfficeMax, which last month both reported moderating sales declines as fear about the economy eased.
OUTLOOK STILL UNCERTAIN: But Staples remains cautious. Its outlook for the current year disappointed investors, and its shares fell.
