WHY DID COPPER RISE: Evidence continues to point toward higher demand for copper, particularly in China. The country is one of the largest importers of the metal.

HOW DID OTHER COMMODITIES DO: Energy prices were mixed after the Energy Information Administration provided weekly details on reserves. Natural gas tumbled as supply remains plentiful. Benchmark crude and heating oil both rose following the report.
