NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Indian freedom fighter Bhagat Singh is considered to be one of the most prominent figures of the Indian independence movement. The young patriot laid down his life for the freedom of his motherland and was hanged to death by the Britishers at the age of 23. Following the supreme sacrifice that the young revolutionary made for his motherland, he went down in the books of history as the great martyr or ’shaheed’ and as a result is referred to as Shaheed Bhagat Singh.

As India was struggling to gain independence from the British rulers, the legacy left behind by Shaheed Bhagat Singh gave inspiration to millions of youth across the nation to play a significant role to ensure the freedom of their motherland. At a very young age, the revolutionary realized his duties towards his motherland and embarked on a journey to overthrow the British rule. Shaheed Bhagat Singh was known for his association with various revolutionary groups and also became a part of the Hindustan Republican Association. The revolutionary was taken into custody after he along with his compatriot Batukeshwar Dutt, threw bombs at the Central Assembly Hall. However, the revolutionary continued with protests inside the prison as he went on a 64 day hunger strike demanding equal rights for Indian and British inmates. On March 23, 1931, Shaheed Bhagat Singh was hanged for the murder of a British police officer in retaliation of the killing of Lala Lajpat Rai.

Despite his unprecedented contribution to the Indian freedom struggle, Shaheed Bhagat Singh is almost a forgotten martyr with today’s generation hardly aware of his biography and the unimaginable sacrifices that the revolutionary had made at such a young age.
