UNESCO to help India achieve universal education

NEW DELHI - United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) would support Indian government in achieving the ‘Education for All’ goal by 2015.
Talking to reporters here on Monday, UNESCO’s Director General, Irina Bokova said that it was extremely important to promote primary education for children from 6-14.
I do believe that India can reach by 2015… the millennium development goal, so we will do everything possible to assist the government in achieving this goal.”
Bokova, who is in India on her first official visit, said that the UNESCO would set up an institute of peace in the country by the end of this year, to be named after India’s iconic freedom fighter Mahatma Gandhi.
“I guess by the end of the year we can finish all the modalities of establishing the Mahatma Gandhi centre. And it’s an institutional goal, but there is a lot of political message in creating this centre,” said Bokova.
Human Resource Development Minister Kabil Sibal has said that funds have been allocated for the institute and the process has been initiated for allocation of land. (ANI)
