It was an urge to bring the folk traditions of rural regions into the urban areas. Though it was celebrated in south of India, it tried to highlight a cosmopolitan culture. The Chennai Sangamam 2010 will detail Indian tradition with lots of grandeur. It is an elaborate celebration of heritage which is celebrated for seven days, starting from 10th of Jan till 16th of Jan. There are almost 2000 performers taking part in this celebration.

The chief minister, M. Karunanidhi inaugurated the Chennai Sangamam of 2010 at Islands Ground and with it began the detailed celebration. What is unique about Sangamam is its venue. Unlike other festivals which are mostly celebrated in auditoriums, Sangamam is celebrated by the beaches, on the streets or in the open parks. The department of tourism and culture of the Chennai state government helps a lot in making the festival successful. The food festival, which is also an integral part of Sangamam was introduced in the year 2008. Mahadevan, the south Indian culinary association and Oriental cuisines private limited is known to be taking part in the event, to cater to the foodies.

Last but not the least, the performance of classical Carnatic music in the Chennai Sangamam 2010 also details the rich musical culture and tradition of India. For people who shifted to urban areas for a better lifestyle, Sangamam brings the flavor and aroma of folk culture. It makes them nostalgic about country life and is the time for refreshing their souls.
