JUBA, Sudan - The president of Southern Sudan on Friday warned cheering crowds of a return to violence "on a massive scale" if the region's independence referendum - now 100 days away - is not held on time.

CAIRO - Sudan's ruling party on Tuesday laid down a series of conditions for holding a crucial referendum on southern secession, including demarcating the borders and redeploying southern forces, that could further inflame tensions in the divided country.

JUBA, Sudan - The government of Southern Sudan is opening cease-fire talks with a commander who launched a revolt against the government following April elections.
