DARJEELING - West Bengal Chief Minister Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee has said that the separate state of Gorkhaland would never be carved out.

Addressing a public rally here on Sunday, Bhattacharjee said: “The time has come for the political leaders in Darjeeling to realise that clamouring for Gorkhaland will yield nothing. It is not acceptable - either to the State or the Centre. It is not realistic, it is not possible.”

Urging the GJM leaders to give up its statehood demand and stop its agitation, Bhattacharjee asked: “Who is gaining from this? The hotels in the hills are closed. After a few days, there could emerge a situation in which the people of Darjeeling will not get anything to eat.”

nless the agitation was withdrawn, he said, there could be no dialogue to end the impasse in the region.

He asked the people of the region to live in harmony and questioned the logic behind the various fora fighting for the creation of Gorkhaland .

“In Dooars and Siliguri region why are you creating unrest? In the entire Terai region Bengalis, Biharis, Marwaris, Punjabis, Nepalis and even Adivasis (tribals) are residing as one, all in peace, why create this unrest?” thundered Bhattacharjee.

A renewed demand for a separate Gorkhaland region, which would include Darjeeling and some contiguous areas of Jalpaiguri District, has created fresh turmoil over the past few months.

t the fifth round of tripartite talks in New Delhi, the GJM had agreed to the constitution of an interim council by 2011 prior to the creation of a separate state.

he Gorkha population in West Bengal estimated to be around a million has been demanding a separate state. (ANI)
