THIRUVANANTHAPURAM - Scores of couples participated in a unique race in which the husbands carried their wives on the shoulders at the beachside in Thiruvananthapuram.

Ecorun, a non-governmental organisation working in the area of environment, organised this race on Saturday with an objective of spreading mass awareness concerning the environment and allied ecological issues.

“The purpose of the run is to encourage the government to ban pesticides that have not been proved harmless. That is our first purpose of the run. The second purpose is to encourage the government to ban asbestos sheets for roofing and the third purpose is to ban the burning of plastics,” said Thomas George, Chairman of Ecorun.

This was a 51-metres race for men in the age group of 35-45 years.

The men had to carry their spouses either on their shoulders or in the arms.

The winning couple Baiju, an auto rickshaw driver, and his wife Indukumari won the race and they were awarded a cash prize of rupees 10, 000. By K.S Aashik (ANI)
