RAWALPINDI - The Pakistan Army is pursuing a clear policy of supporting the country’s political set-up within constitutional limits, and Army Chief General Ashfaq Pervez Kayani respects all political leaderships, Inter Services Public Relations has said.

DG ISPR Major General Athar Abbas said in a statement that General Kayani respects all the national leaders, including PML-N chief Nawaz Sharif, Geo News reports.

According to one of the leaked cables released by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks, Kayani considered plans to oust President Asif Ali Zardari from office to prevent opposition leader Nawaz Sharif coming to power.

Kayani hinted that he might have to “persuade President Zardari to resign if the situation sharply deteriorates… This would not be a formal coup but would leave in place the PPP government led by PM Gilani, thus avoiding elections that likely would bring Nawaz Sharif to power.” (ANI)
