BHUBANESWAR - All India Radio (AIR) and Doordarshan halted services in Orissa Tuesday in response to a two-day nationwide strike called by the association of the public sector broadcaster’s employees.

The regional broadcast has been paralysed across all stations in the state, Bhubaneswar unit secretary of Association of Radio and Television Employees (ARTEE) Babuli Kumar Pradhan told IANS.

The strike was called by the National Federation of Akashvani and Doordarshan Employees (NFADE), an umbrella organisation of 21 service associations, demanding timely payment of wages and withdrawal of the Prasar Bharati (Broadcasting Corporation of India) Act, 1990.

This act placed all Doordarshan and AIR staff, earlier part of the information and broadcasting ministry, under Prasar Bharati.

“Prasar Bharati has failed to take care of its employees,” Pradhan said.

More than 1,500 employees of programming, technical and engineering divisions staged demonstrations in stations across Orissa.
