MELBOURNE - Oz residents are calling for the ban of a new Australian chant ‘Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi oi oi’ that seemed to have gripped the fancy of few in the Land Down Under.

The Courier-Mail reporter Rory Gibson argued for the chant to be banned, saying that Australia looks like a nation “inhabited by ignorant boofheads” after the chorus was sung in St Peter’s Square at the Vatican “by a bunch of Mary MacKillop yobs”.

55 per cent people in a poll said that the chant is embarrassing and should be changed. Just 17 per cent of voters want to keep the chant.

“Coming from an Aussie who went to Rome for the canonisation, I was embarrassed to hear this chant at the ceremony,” News.com.au quoted one reader as commenting.

“It was incredibly disrespectful and should be reserved for sporting matches only.”

Another reader said the chant was ruining Australia’s reputation overseas.

“I’m not religious but hearing a bunch of Aussie yobs chanting at what is a sacred occasion for some people, does nothing for our reputation overseas.”

Another comment said, “Just look at how irritating a bunch of Americans chanting “USA! USA! USA!” is. Now what makes the Australian version is any better? In fact, the yanks probably know it’s not appropriate at the Vatican.”

Not everyone complained about the chanting though.

Queenslander Paul said we should blame drunken idiots, not the song.”They will chant anything, anytime at any volume,” he said. “Don’t blame the song, blame the person.” (ANI)
