NEW DELHI - Hundreds of devotees thronged the Jhandewala Temple to worship Goddess Durga, as the nine-day long Navratri festival began on Friday.

The festival is celebrated with much enthusiasm and devotees often fast for all nine days.

Ramesh, a priest at the temple, advised devotees to concentrate on worshipping the goddess and to not be hard on themselves.

“I would only say that these days, the devotees should try to fast and worship Goddess Durga. They must not be too hard on themselves, but should celebrate the festival of their own will,” said Ramesh.

Devotees are eager to perform the rigors of fasting, in addition to lengthy prayers.

“I celebrate the festival by fasting all the nine days and I worship Goddess Durga every day. I would also pray that the Goddess fulfills everybody’s wishes,” said Meena Verma, a devotee at the temple.
