Yemen boosts security because of al-Qaida threat

SAN’A, Yemen — Yemeni officials say authorities have boosted security around embassies and government buildings in the capital because of intelligence indicating al-Qaida is planning a new attack.

Security officials say more checkpoints have been placed in the main streets of San’a, one of the few areas under the control of Yemen’s weak government.

Beyond the capital, al-Qaida and other Islamic militants roam relatively freely, particularly in the remote and mountainous south.

The country’s al-Qaida offshoot has hammered Yemen’s security forces. Last week, two al-Qaida gunmen ambushed a bus of Yemeni security personnel in San’a, killing one person and injuring 10.

The security officials spoke Monday on condition of anonymity because they weren’t authorized to speak to media.
