HYDERABAD - The bodies of three trainee technicians of the Indian Air Force were recovered from a lake on the city’s outskirts Sunday, police said.

The trio from Helicopter Training School of the Air Force Station Hakimpet were drowned Saturday evening during a picnic at Shameerpet Lake.

The dead have been identified as R.S. Badaria, Satyam Chowdary and Manish Tiyagi, all in their mid-20s.

A group of eight technicians had gone to the picnic, which turned tragic when Tiyagi, from Uttar Pradesh, stepped into the water to wash his legs and slipped.

The deep portion of the lake was full to the brim. As he screamed for help, his friends dived into the water to save him.

Police said since none of them knew how to swim, they all were drowned.

Ravi Yadav, another technician, told police that he too jumped into the water as he knew swimming. But he got scared when the other three held him tightly, putting his life into danger.

Yadav managed to save himself but the other three were drowned.
