People celebrate 114th birthday of social reformer Hijam Irabot in Imphal

IMPHAL - People celebrated the 114th birthday of Jananeta Hijam Irabot, a social reformer by holding various culture and literary programmes in Imphal.

The event was organised under the aegis of Irabot Celebration Committee, Manipur at Mapal Kangjeibung. Many dignitaries attended the celebration on the culmination day of the month long commemorative observance.

“He sacrificed, made the state intact because of the proposal of the formation of the Purvanchal Pradesh was re-grown. So, now looking into all his sacrifices, his works, people are remembering and it is regarded, as he is the only undisputed leader of the people of Manipur,” said Dr. Nara, chief organiser and ex- state minister of art and culture.

“Therefore, at his 114th birth anniversary the celebration community has mobilized and enter the state of Manipur for one complete month to celebrate and today is the last day and this is the birthday of Jananeta Hijam Irabot,” he added.

A huge portrait of Irabot was also taken out in a procession from Irabot Bhavan. On arrival at Mapal Kangjeibung, the public offered floral tributes to the late leader.

Hijam Irabot Singh (30 September 1896 - 26 September 1951), also known as Jana Neta Hijam Irabot, was an active political and social activist during the British rule in Manipur.

During his eventful life, he had written many journals and composed poems, wrote plays and acted them, participated in various sports activities, but he is best remembered for his leadership roles against social injustices during the second Nupilal, 1939. (ANI)
