532 National Guard troops now at Arizona border

PHOENIX — The National Guard says 532 troops are now stationed at the Arizona-Mexico border under President Obama’s plan to boost security along the border.

The first of the troops began being deployed on Aug. 30.

The National Guard said Friday that all 532 troops allocated to Arizona under Obama’s plan are now stationed at the border.

The troops do not have the power to detain illegal immigrants or anyone else but are carrying guns for self-defense. They are acting as extra eyes and ears for U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Obama ordered 1,200 National Guard troops along the entire U.S.-Mexico border in May.
