LONDON -British troops have handed over Sangin to US and Afghan forces, after losing more than 100 lives in the district during the past four years.

The Sangin area of Helmand province is considered the most perilous military posting in Afghanistan. Of the 337 British servicemen and women killed since the war began in 2001, a third have lost their lives in the area.

Dr Liam Fox, the defence secretary, announced plans to withdraw from the area in July and 40 Commando Royal Marines officially handed over to the US Marine Corps at 6.30 a.m. on Monday, The Telegraph reports.

British troops will now move to central Helmand. Around 300 logistic and security personnel from the Theatre Reserve Battalion stationed in Cyprus will be sent to the province to assist with the redeployment. (ANI)
