Tribes benefit from $127M in DOJ grant funding

FLAGSTAFF, Ariz. — The U.S. Department of Justice has awarded nearly $127 million to address public safety in tribal communities through a new grant process.

For the first time this year, tribes could submit one application for 10 different DOJ grant programs, ranging from juvenile justice to enhancing law enforcement and tribal justice systems.

Tribes previously had to submit multiple applications for grant funding, a process tribal leaders said was cumbersome.

Associate Attorney General Tom Perrelli announced the funding Wednesday.

He says the new approach saves time and resources, and gives the DOJ a better understanding of the tribes’ public safety needs.

Perrelli says the department received 237 applications that included 720 funding requests.
