Ex-Detroit councilwoman must go to prison by Fri.

DETROIT — Former Detroit councilwoman Monica Conyers must report to prison by Friday after a federal appeals court refused to delay her sentence.

A three-judge panel turned down the request Thursday.

Conyers faces a 37-month sentence for taking bribes to support a sludge contract when she served on the council.

She pleaded guilty in 2009 but has been trying to undo her conviction. Conyers’ lawyer had asked the appeals court to delay her sentence until an appeal could be heard.

A message seeking comment was left with her lawyer.

Conyers is the wife of U.S. Rep. John Conyers, a Michigan Democrat and chairman of the House Judiciary Committee.
