High waves knock man off pier into Lake Michigan

LUDINGTON, Mich. — Police in Michigan have dive teams searching for a man they believe drowned in Lake Michigan after high waves knocked him off a pier in Ludington.

Ludington Police Chief Mark Barnett tells radio station WKLA-FM the missing man is Anupam Bhattacharjee (AH’-noo-pahm bah-tah-CHAHR’-jee). The 26-year-old Detroit resident is a student at Wayne State University, where he’s working on his doctorate in computer science.

Barnett says a wave knocked the man from the pier about 12:45 p.m. Monday.

The National Weather Service reports south winds of 24 mph with gusts up to 29 mph around that time, and witnesses say waves ranged from 6 to 10 feet.
