Theatre artists to highlight women’s suffering in Manipur

IMPHAL - With various militant groups not allowing people of Manipur to live in peace, the plight of women during all these years has not gained the attention it deserve.

A 20-day theatre workshop “Women in Turmoil” was held here recently to highlight issues concerning women in the State.

Be it a bomb attack or an economic blockade - it has always affected the local women here quite badly. Women do not want instability. That’s why they often take to the streets to protest against the situation in the State.

Women theatre artists are highlighting the agony and the anguish of the women at Kalimai Mandap in Imphal.

Themed “Women in Turmoil”, the 20-day theatre workshop-cum-production for women artists was initiated by the department of Art and Culture, Manipur.

To reach a larger audience the play will be enacted in the streets in Manipur from September 4. It’s an attempt to raise awareness of the people about issues that affect them.

“Insurgency-related problems are there in Manipur and women are facing problems. Our artists are trying to portray the reality,” said Yumnam Rajendra, the director.

“Being a woman and an actor, I want to focus on the real issues concerning the society,” said Mayangbam Rina, artist.

These artists have practiced for 20 days which reflects in the play - “Mitamgi Shathek” or, The Dance of the Statue.

Directed by Y Rajendra and Budha Chongthem, it deals with existing circumstances and their impact on women.

In the play, militancy-led-violence like abduction, killing and extortion and their consequences have been reflected.

“Women play a significant role in the society. Since time immemorial, their sacrifices have been admirable. This inspired me to do the play,” said Budha Chingtham, the playwright.

“This is one of the best performances by the director. He has tried to present the miseries of people. He has succeeded in leaving its impact,” said Kuladas, one of the audience. (ANI)
