Pookalam

THRISSUR, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- A New Delhi based NGO was instrumental in creating the world’s largest Pookalam or floral carpet on Tuesday to celebrate the festival of Onam. The 14,400 square foot Pookalam which was made by a group of school children at the Lulu Convention Centre in the city of Thrissur in Kerala, entered the Limca Book of Records for being the largest floral carpet all across the world. After registering its place in the much coveted Limca Book of Records, the floral carpet is eyeing the Guinness Book of World Records. The floral carpet is a treat to watch.

Although basking in the glory of holding the Limca Book of Records is something that the 150 school children who were involved in making it are enjoying, it was surely not a cakewalk for them. With the aim of making the largest floral carpet, an estimated 12.5 tonnes of flowers were used and it took around three hours to complete the stunning floral carpet or Pookalam. The venture to create the largest floral carpet was undertaken by the NGO Goonj which is based in New Delhi and works with under-privileged children in collaboration with Whirlpool.

It has been reported that the children supported by the NGO used only different kinds of flowers such as jasmine, rose, marigold, among other to create the beautiful decoration which took hours to make. Pookalam is made almost in every household in Kerala during the auspicious occasion of Onam as it symbolizes happiness and prosperity. Although nowadays artificial colors are used to make the decorations, traditionally Pookalam is made only with a variety of colorful flowers.
