SAN FRANCISCO (GaeaTimes.com)- The San Francisco Ferry Plaza Farmers Market is all set to celebrate the Gilroy Garlic Festival this weekend and buyers across the United States have assembled in this California region to take their pick from the Rocambole garlic, the full stemmed garlic or any other variety of the spice, absolutely fresh. California is the largest producer of garlic in America, producing more than 90% of the spice and the Gilroy Garlic Festival is the time when every American assembles in San Francisco to choose from the wide variety of garlic that is on display.

Most of the garlic that are sold at the Gilroy Garlic Festival are grown in the Hunter Orchards of Siskiyou County where it is said that the garlic achieves its full flavor because of the extreme cold climate that the region faces during the winters. The Orchard garlic is however not the spiciest of them all. Farmers are of the opinion that if somebody prefers a strong garlic flavor in their food then he is to purchase the Korean Red Hot garlic grown in the Thomas Farms of Corralitos in the Santa Cruz County. The Elephant garlic on the other hand are preferred by those who like a sweet taste to be mingled in their spices.

The large amounts of garlic that is purchased at the Gilroy Garlic Festival is to be stored in a cool dark place like the refrigerator so that the flavor of the spice can be retained for a longer period of time, say the farmers. Garlic not only adds spice o food, it is also a rich source of vitamin B and other minerals essential for the body.
