WAC puts expansion plans on hold

DENVER — Western Athletic Conference commissioner Karl Benson says the league plans to operate with eight members in the 2011-12 season after Boise State departs.

Boise State has accepted an invitation to join the Mountain West Conference after this season.

Benson said in a release Tuesday that the WAC will delay adding to its membership until July 1, 2012 at the earliest.

He says the WAC’s board of directors and athletic directors have “explored several membership options,” but they it is in the best interest of the conference to go with eight schools in 2011-12.

The WAC’s remaining members are Fresno State, Hawaii, Idaho, Louisiana Tech, Nevada, New Mexico State, San Jose State and Utah State.
