Obama shelves trip to Indonesia, Australia

WASHINGTON — The White House says President Barack Obama is postponing his trip to Indonesia and Australia.

The president was to visit both countries later this month along with a quick stop in Guam. White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said just after midnight that Obama was delaying the trip to some undetermined date with “deep regret.”

No immediate reason was offered. But the timing comes as the United States is grappling with the worst oil spill in the nation’s history.

Obama called the leaders of Indonesia and Australia on Thursday night to share the news. Gibbs said Obama looks forward to rescheduling so he visit both nations soon.
