AP names Matt Moore news editor for Pennsylvania

PHILADELPHIA — Matt Moore, The Associated Press chief of bureau of Germany and Poland for the past two years, has been named news editor for Pennsylvania.

The appointment was announced Friday by East Regional Editor Larry Rosenthal.

Moore, 39, joined the AP in Jackson, Miss., in 1999 as a reporter and business writer before transferring to AP’s business desk in New York as a night supervisor. He later moved to the AP’s international desk before going overseas.

“News editors are the driving force in fulfilling our promise to deliver great state and global reports,” said Senior Managing Editor Mike Oreskes, who oversees AP’s domestic operation and all-formats daily news report. “Pennsylvania is a great news state — a perfect match for Matt Moore’s proven journalist talents.”

David Rising, a veteran AP newsman in Berlin, will assume temporary leadership in Germany pending appointment of a permanent bureau chief, said Senior Managing Editor John Daniszewski, who oversees AP’s international report.

Moore arrived in Europe in 2002, when he became news editor for the Nordics and Baltics, based in Stockholm. Three years later he moved to Frankfurt, where he was business writer for Germany and central Europe.

Named chief of bureau of Germany and Poland in March 2008, he helped oversee AP’s former German service and orchestrated coverage of Germany’s role in Afghanistan, the European Union and the 20th anniversary of German reunification.

Moore has reported from Europe, Africa and the Middle East, including Iraq. He has covered major stories including the 2005 London bombings and the murder of Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh. He also helped steer AP’s social media coverage of the Copenhagen climate conference, The Climate Pool.

“Matt Moore is a dynamic, energetic and inspiring leader, passionate about covering the news, whether it is business, politics, sports or crime,” Daniszewski said. “His flair for producing strong stories and working with teams of journalists has been demonstrated repeatedly in AP’s international service, and he will bring that same enthusiasm and hard work to his new role in Pennsylvania.”

Moore, who will be based in Philadelphia, graduated from Auburn University in Alabama in 1993 with a journalism degree. Before joining the AP, he worked for various publications, including The Dothan Eagle in Alabama, The News Herald in Panama City, Fla., and Florida Trend magazine.
