Kenya seeks return of citizen held at Gitmo

NAIROBI, Kenya — The Kenyan government says it is seeking the return of one of its citizens held at Guantanamo Bay because it wants to question him over his alleged involvement in a hotel attack and an unsuccessful attempt to shoot down an Israeli airliner in 2002.

A letter from the foreign ministry told families of the 13 victims killed in the Paradise Hotel bombing that Kenya had initiated the process to bring 37-year-old Mohamed Abdulmalik home from the U.S. military prison. The letter signed by the ministry’s permanent secretary was shown to The Associated Press on Wednesday.

The U.S. says Abdulmalik is a member of al-Qaida.

Abdulmalik’s family sued the Kenyan government last year for wrongful detention and torture and demanded $30 million in damages.
