Operation commences to retrieve captive soldier

VILLAVICENCIO, Colombia — A Brazilian helicopter emblazoned with the Red Cross logo has departed Colombia’s eastern city of Villavicencio on a mission to retrieve a soldier being freed by leftist rebels.

The chopper departed Sunday morning in overcast skies and a drizzle for an undisclosed jungle location.

It was to ferry to freedom Josue Calvo, an ailing 23-year-old private captured by FARC rebels in April 2009.

The opposition senator leading the mission, Piedad Cordoba, says the FARC will turn over a second soldier early next week.

Sgt. Pablo Emilio Moncayo, 32, has been held for 12 years. His father became famous for walking halfway across Colombia to press for his son’s release.
