Kenya’s top leaders to meet, defuse political jam

NAIROBI, Kenya — An adviser to Kenya’s prime minister says the president and prime minister will meet Sunday to chart a way forward out of the country’s political deadlock.

Salim Lone (pronounced Lohn) says President Mwai Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga spoke on the phone late Wednesday and had a cordial and useful conversation.

Tension between the two has risen since a dispute last weekend spiraled into a war of words over which leader holds which powers.

The dispute has sparked fears that a falling out could lead the country back into the postelection violence that killed more than 1,000 people in early 2008.

The U.S. and former U.N. chief Kofi Annan have urged the two Kenyans to meet and work out their differences.
