Germany: Iran must prove nuclear program peaceful

MUNICH — Germany says a nuclear-armed Iran is “unacceptable” and that Tehran needs to prove to the world that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes only.

Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle told a gathering of the world’s top defense officials in Munich on Saturday that “a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable for us” and would “lead to a destabilization of the entire region.”

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki suggested the night before that he believed that Tehran was “approaching a final agreement” on its nuclear program.

But Westerwelle, Germany’s vice chancellor, says if Iran is actually serious it “must take action.”
