Top Vermont Yankee official ‘relieved of duties’

MONTPELIER, Vt. — A top official at the Vermont Yankee nuclear plant has been permanently relieved of his duties and placed on leave.

That word on Tuesday from Vermont Yankee owner Entergy Nuclear comes just weeks after Vice President Jay Thayer publicly apologized for statements he made in Public Service Board hearings last year about whether the plant had underground piping of the kind that could carry radioactive tritium.

In a presentation to shareholders, Entergy CEO J. Wayne Leonard did not identify Thayer by name, but offered a description of the official removed from Vermont Yankee in a way that describes Thayer and his testimony.

The company has admitted misleading state officials about the existence of the underground pipes.
