Opel: Antwerp, Belgium plant to be shuttered

BERLIN — Adam Opel GmbH says it is closing down its plant in Antwerp, Belgium later this year.

A statement from Opel CEO Nick Reilly says the closure is part of “the tough reality of the current business environment.”

The statement said that the company did not expect the auto market to bounce back to pre-recession levels in the near future.

To ensure the company’s long-term survival, “Opel has to reduce its production capacity by 20 percent,” the statement said.
