Grenade blast kills 3 soldiers in Colombia

Bogota, Feb 24 (IANS/EFE) Three soldiers were killed and three wounded when they accidentally set off a grenade at a base in La Guajira, a province in Colombia’s Caribbean region, the army said Wednesday.
The accident occurred Tuesday afternoon at an artillery battalion base in the town of Buenavista, the army’s 1st Division said in a statement released in the coastal city of Santa Marta.
“According to the initial information, the incident happened when the soldiers, who were carrying out maintenance of the area, handled a grenade, which exploded,” the army’s 1st Division said.
A military brigade in the area is conducting the investigation, the army unit said, adding that it was confident that “the causes of the accident” would be determined.
