Mahatma Gandhi Remembered On Death Anniversary

NEW DELHI, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- People across the nation are paying tribute to the Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi on his 63rd death anniversary today. Special prayer meetings and commemorative services are being held in states across the nation on Sunday to mark the day when the Father of the Nation was assassinated by Nathuram Godse way back in the year 1948 in the national capital. Every year, this day when Mahatma Gandhi laid down his life, is observed as the Martyrs’ Day. Many prominent personalities paid floral tributes to the iconic leader on his 63th death anniversary at Rajghat in the national capital.

The dignitaries who paid homage to Mahatma Gandhi on his death anniversary on Sunday included President Pratibha Patil, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Vice President Hamid Ansari, Defence Minister A K Antony, Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit as well as Congress President and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi. Apart from them, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Sushma Swaraj, L K Advani, were also present at Rajghat to pay floral homage to the memorial of the Father of the Nation. A host of other ministers and leaders hailing from different political parties graced the occasion to pay respect to Mahatma Gandhi on his 63rd death anniversary.

At the Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad, in the state of Gujarat, the 63th death anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi was commemorated with a two-minute silence to remember the iconic leader. Among the host of events that would be taking place throughout the day, Gandhi Smriti, a museum which is dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi would be holding special programs and prayer services to mark the day.
