AGARTALA - Tension Thursday gripped a village in western Tripura bordering Bangladesh after an Indian man was killed in firing by Border Security Force (BSF) troopers, officials said here.

“Abdul Hoque, 30, was killed when BSF personnel opened fire at Durgapur, a village along the Bangladesh border in western Tripura, in the wee hours,” police spokesman Tushar Kanti Das told reporters.

The incident occurred when Hoque was running towards the border along with some cattle.

“The BSF patrolling party first asked Hoque to stop. When he refused, the paramilitary personnel opened fire, killing him on the spot,” Das said.

Tension is high in and around the border village. Senior police and BSF officials have rushed to the spot, 65 km south of Agartala, and an inquiry has been launched into the incident.

Additional police forces have been deployed to maintain peace and calm in the tension-ridden village.
