LONDON - Julian Assange, founder of whistleblowing website WikiLeaks, is claiming to have secret documents damaging to media mogul Rupert Murdoch and his News Corp empire.

Assange told the New Statesman he had withheld a cache of confidential US government cables and files relating to Murdoch’s business as “insurance”.

The former hacker has claimed his life would be in danger if he is extradited to Sweden to face allegations of sexual assault.

“If something happens to me or to WikiLeaks, ‘insurance’ files will be released,” Assange was quoted as saying by The Independent.

WikiLeaks reportedly possesses 250,000 confidential US government cables, and those already published have exposed embarrassing diplomatic secrets.

Assange now says he has paperwork which could be hurtful to News Corp.

“There are 504 US embassy cables on one broadcasting organisation and there are cables on Murdoch and News Corp,” he said.
