LONDON - Members of the controversial Brit anti-Islamist group, English Defence League (EDL), have been told to remain vigilant after hackers stole a database containing names and addresses from one of the organisation’s websites.

According to the BBC, a group called the “Mujahideen Hacking Unit” stole the database of members who had recently purchased items from an EDL online merchandise store or who had donated money to the group.

The case has been referred to the police, but in a statement the EDL apologised to members concerned about their safety. We don’t anticipate any problems as these types of data theft are usually committed to cause annoyance rather than having any other ulterior motive,” the group said. If, however, anyone does feel threatened or in any way unsafe we would urge you to contact the police immediately and explain the situation,” it added.

The EDL rose to prominence last year by staging a number of protests against what it calls the “Islamification” of Britain.

Though the organisation claims that it is not racist or anti-Muslim, opponents such as United Against Fascism say that the group’s agenda is blatantly Islamophobic. (ANI)
