DHEMAJI - Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh has slammed the construction of the Lower Subansiri power project in Assam, which is expected to generate 7421 of million units (MU) hydro power electricity.

The project is located near North Lakhimpur on the Assam-Arunachal border.

Addressing a rally in Dhemaji District, Singh said dam lies in a high seismic zone and is a threat to people living in the lower reaches of River Subansiri.

He blamed the Congress governments in Assam for building huge dams without proper risk-related assessments.

Big dams should be built under special circumstances to solve the problem of drinking water and irrigation, and not for generating power only, Singh said.

He said 32 out of 168 dams, which are to be constructed in the province, are big one, and therefore, no big dam should be built in Arunachal Pradesh, which falls in the seismic zone.

India should have a policy with China on water-sharing to safeguard its rivers, Singh said. (ANI)
