NEW YORK (GaeaTimes.com)- Melissa Petro, who was an art teacher at an elementary school in New York was reassigned after it came to light that she worked as a prostitute earlier on. The decision to reassign the 30-year-old teacher who taught art in the Public School 70 in Bronx, was supposedly taken after she admitted to have worked as a prostitute prior to her profession of the teacher at the elementary school.

Natalie Ravitz, who is a spokesperson of the Education Department of the city said on Sunday that Melissa Petro had been reassigned pending an investigation. At the same time, it has also been revealed that the case has been referred to Richard Condon who is the commissioner of investigations of the city schools. Apart from these, the Education Department spokesperson refrained from making any comments in the matter but confirmed that Melissa Petro worked at the Public School 70 as an art teacher after she was hired in the month of August in 2007 and had reached a tenure. The fact that the 30-year-old art teacher worked as a prostitute was divulged after Melissa Petro wrote an article in an online news website in which she criticized Craiglist for closing down its ‘adult services’ section.

However, the revelation that came as a huge shock to the authorities of the school was the fact that she had used the online portal from October 2006 to January 2007 to meet new men and earned money in exchange of sexual services. Moreover, Melissa Petro wrote that she had to give up the profession as she found working as a sex worker ‘physically demanding, emotionally taxing and spiritually bankrupting.’
