Egypt blames Gaza groups for rocket attacks

CAIRO — Egypt says Palestinian factions from Gaza are behind rocket attacks this week on Israel’s and Jordan’s Red Sea ports.

The rockets hit Monday on a narrow area of the Red Sea coast where Israel’s Eilat and Jordan’s Aqaba ports are located side by side. One person was killed and four people were wounded.

Jordan said the rockets came from Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula. It was the second such attack this year, after a similar volley in April that Israel also said was fired from Egypt.

Aqaba and Eilat are more than 190 miles (300 kilometers) from Gaza. No group in the Palestinian territory is known to have rockets with such a range.

Wednesday’s report by Egypt’s state MENA news agency didn’t name specific groups or say where the attackers fired from.
