PUNJAB, INDIA (GaeaTimes.com)- Almost 50,000 metric tonnes of wheat are rotting inside government godowns and agencies responsible for housing them are busy playing the blame game. According to reports, the Food Corporation of India (FCI) and the grain procurement agencies in Punjab are holding one another responsible for the rotting of the food grains.

The Food Corporation of India on the one hand says that the government agencies in the state could not preserve the stock of food grains well, and the agencies on the other are of the opinion that they did not even stock the wheat, rather it was left in the open because the godowns have been fully packed for the past three years. Therefore we can safely say that the wheat crops did not rot inside godowns only, but also by getting exposed under constant rain and sun. The flooding conditions in the districts of Patiala, Sangrur and Moga in Punjab further added to the woe of the food grains, reported government officials.

The General Manager of the Food Corporation of India said in a statement that in spite of constant reminders sent to the government agencies regarding the storage of the wheat grains produced in the fields of Punjab, they had not adopted any special measures to protect the grains from the floods that hit Punjab some months before and therefore it was natural for the crops to be affected by the rodents and pests which are the direct result of constant exposure to moisture. While the blame game continues, it is the common man, especially the poor who has to bear the brunt of something that they had no role to play in.
