US freelance journalist denied entry to Egypt

CAIRO — An American freelance journalist says he has been denied entry to Egypt.

James Buck says that Egyptian authorities briefly detained him at Cairo airport when he arrived Friday from Dubai. He says officials refused to let him into the country and put on a return flight to Dubai.

Buck said in a message sent to his own Twitter page that Egyptian authorities gave him no explanation for their decision.

But officials at Cairo airport said Buck’s name was on a list of people not allowed into the country for allegedly defaming Egypt’s reputation through articles and pictures published about 2008 civil unrest.

Buck was briefly detained in Egypt in 2008 while covering violent worker strikes in the northern industrial city of Mahalla el-Kobra.
