Modi’s questioning rekindles Zakia Jaffrey’s hope for justice

SURAT/GANDHINAGAR - Zakia Jaffrey, the petitioner and widow of Ehsan Jaffrey, former Congress MP who was allegedly burnt alive during the 2002 communal riots, sees a ray of hope for justice as Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi appeared before a Special Investigation Team (SIT).

On Saturday amid tight security, Modi, was questioned by the Supreme Court appointed SIT, that is investigating into the 2002 Gujarat communal riots, for over five hours.

Jaffrey had filed the petition and alleged that Modi and his administration had aided and abetted the rioters in the incident that has come to be known as the Gulbarg Society massacre on February 28, 2002 where over 60 people, including her husband, were burnt to death in 2002.

Interacting with media in Surat, Jaffrey, said she was optimistic about the SIT probe.

“I can’t even explain it to you that how happy I am. Today, he came on TV and every one saw him (going inside the SIT office).

And, I believe, everyone must have seen him through my eyes. All my friends, sympathisers and all others who had witnessed the massacre,” said Jaffrey

“I still remember when I stepped down from my house that day, I walked over bodies, and everyone who saw this, also must be feeling that God answers prayers even if he delays. And today, he was finally called, so, of course, he will have to speak something there,” she added.

She further said that many wanted Modi to step down from his post.

“It’s not just that I am feeling, but every-one is saying that he won’t remain chief minister anymore. He will either have to resign or he’ll be given punishment,” Jaffrey added.

Modi, 59, is the first chief minister of any state to be called for questioning in a criminal complaint of mass murder.

Interacting with media as soon as he emerged out from the SIT office Modi said he would abide by the Indian Constitution.

“I like any other Indian citizen, respect the law and will abide by the Constitution of the country. No one is above law,” Modi said.

“I have given a strong reply to those vested interests who have been remarking about my conduct” he added on Saturday afternoon. (ANI)
