BHUBANESWAR - Maoist guerrillas blasted three school buildings in Sundergarh district of Orissa, police said Wednesday.

“The Maoists have blown up three buildings. They blasted one in Sana Balijora village Tuesday night. Two others at Mahupada and Jharbeda were bombed around 10 a.m. (Wednesday),” Sudarshan Sethi, a police official, said.

According to police, nearly 50 armed Maoists were involved in these incidents. Maoists regularly target school building as these are used by the paramilitary forces deputed for poll duties.

Meanwhile, people of five villages of Relhatur ‘panchayat’ (village council) have sought protection from the Maoists and taken shelter in Balang police station.

“Villagers of the five villages are also squatting on national highway 215 seeking police protection,” he added.
